In the Fall of 1969, The Zodiac Killer terrorized millions of San Francisco Bay Area residents. The psychopathic serial killer even threatened to shoot a busload of school kids. Decades later, one of those kids on the bus, now TV news anchor and investigative journalist Dale Julin, played the hunch of his life.
In what his priest later jokingly called a case of divine intervention, Julin interviewed a homeless man, supposedly on the run for his life, because he figured out that “The Old Man,” a father figure to him for decades, was the Zodiac Killer.
Julin did not believe him. But then, using the old man’s name…“Gary Francis Poste,” Julin began to unlock the anagrams found in the strange teasing letters Zodiac sent to the newspapers.
“Gary Francis Poste” turned out to be the Zodiac Killer’s anagram cipher key long sought by both the FBI and cold case detectives. Using his actual name led to the creation of anagram solutions that turned out to be sick treasure maps. Maps that took Julin and an unlikely team of amateur investigators to a Lake Tahoe forest campground where Zodiac hid the bones of missing nurse Donna Lass.
That discovery drove a deeply personal investigative journey that lasted for years. A journey that led to the inescapable conclusion that the Zodiac Killer was still alive, and still very dangerous.
Along the way, Julin was assisted by many Good Samaritans. Regular folks willing to help bring justice to Zodiac’s victims, and closure to their families. They reminded him of the goodness of people and renewed his faith in God... even as he sought to catch the 20th Century’s most infamous serial killer.
This memoir was written over the course of 9 years, in real time, as Julin progressed through his investigation. As with any investigation, it evolved. So the author has added the latest updates from 2023, as it is finally published.
