On the Determination of Human Existence

Originally published on January 10, 1931, in the Swiss newspaper Bünder Tageblatt , "On the Determination of Human Existence" is a brief philosophical and humanistic essay written after Einstein had become an internationally renowned intellectual. It emerged during the interwar period, a time marked by social upheaval, the rise of nationalism, and growing questions concerning the role of science and the individual. The essay is not a scientific work but a personal reflection addressed to the general reader, akin to the writings later collected in The World As I See It .
In the essay, Einstein argues that human beings do not live for themselves alone but exist in relation to others. He rejects the notion of absolute freedom, maintaining that our actions are governed in part by an inner necessity, in a view that closely accords with Schopenhauer's philosophy. He criticizes the pursuit of wealth, success, and happiness as ultimate ends, contending instead that the true guiding ideals of life are goodness, beauty, and truth. He advocates a life of simplicity, modesty, and devotion to intellectual work, even when such a life entails a measure of solitude.
In the concluding section, Einstein identifies the sense of mystery as the highest expression of human experience. From it arise genuine art, authentic knowledge, and true religious feeling. In his view, the proper attitude toward life is not to master the mystery of the universe, but to contemplate it with reverence and humility, seeking to understand only a small portion of the intelligence manifested in nature.
