The Englischer's Lie

Miriam Stoll came to her aunt and uncle's community for clarity, not for a husband. She had already made her peace with going home unspoken for.

Then a tall, flustered young man knocks her into the dirt on the road to the general store, apologises three times, and walks her the rest of the way.

Elijah Stutzman asks questions no man back home has ever asked her. How many kinner does she want? What she hopes for? Where she sees her life going? For the first time in two years, Miriam looks forward to a morning.

Then her mother's message arrives, and Miriam goes north to a father too weak to leave his bed.

She writes. Elijah writes back, faster and warmer than she can manage. But something has crept into his last three letters, a tightness he will not name, and she cannot ask about it on paper.

By the time she comes back, an Englischer woman has been driving two hours every weekend to sit where Miriam should be sitting.

And when that woman corners her on a quiet trail with a story about what Elijah does at the boardinghouse, Miriam has to decide what she trusts more: a month of a good man's actions, or a stranger's certainty.
