The Spoils of War

Sparrow has spent his entire life believing one truth: King Evander is a monster.

When Sparrow is captured in battle and dragged before the throne, he expects torture, execution, or worse. He's spent the last ten years hating the tyrant king who carved his kingdom from blood and conquest and now he's the battered prize for a man known to take whatever he wants by force.

But although he is certainly a prisoner of war, he is not met with cruelty or chains. Evander's kindness is as unexpected as it is confusing, and none of what Sparrow sees of the king’s rule or his people’s lives matches the horror stories he's been told.

What's worse is Sparrow feels drawn to Evander like a moth to a flame, like being pulled in an undertow he cannot fight. Sparrow has never let himself be distracted by attraction, by desire or want, but Evander makes him feel like he's on fire and burning alive from the inside.

But as Sparrow's hatred crumbles in the face of Evander's kindness, a terrible revelation emerges: his own people aren't the victims he believed them to be. They're the aggressors, led personally by his father, and everything he's fought for has been built on a lie.
