Having fought against the British in the Boer War, in 1917 he decided to go to London, in order to join the British Army. Presenting himself at a recruiting office in Chelsea, he enlisted as a private soldier. Shortly afterwards he was commissioned, and was sent to the Western Front in September 1917. Whilst on the Western Front, he witnessed the German spring offensive in 1918, and the allied counter-attack which followed. He was wounded twice as well as being gassed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eReitz fought right through to the Armistice in 1918 - he was due to take part in an attack on the morning of 11 November 1918, but the attack was halted when the signal announcing the Armistice arrived.
