As a young woman in the 1960s, the author dreamed of seeing more of the world. At that point in time, the economic climate in Belgium did not offer good employment opportunities to support a family of four. Together with her husband, they decided to try their luck -- first in Algeria and later in the Congo, which was also known, at that time, as Zaire.
